Today my "baby", Kevin, got his learner's permit - yikes! He has been itching to drive, unlike his 2 older brothers, who put it off and put it off. He had to wait until he was 15 1/2, and today was the day! (Most of his friends already have their permits, he happens to be one of the youngest of his group, so the wait was practically unbearable!) Luckily there was no school today since it's the end of the quarter and it's a teacher workday. So off we headed to the DMV. He said he felt like he was ready, although he knew not to get too confident, since his oldest brother, Tim, actually failed the test 3 times!
On this test they give you 10 questions about signs, and if you miss one, the testing machine shuts down, and you have to wait 15 days until you can come back and try again. I knew after he'd been gone for about 5 minutes that he had probably gotten past the signs part (phew!), so then I was just keeping my fingers crossed. Sure enough, he emerged from the testing area with a big smile on his face, and I knew he'd done it!
As you can see, he doesn't have the actual permit. He had his picture taken, but with the new laws, they mail you the permit in about 10 days. So we'll just have to wait to laugh at the mug shot!
Learner's Permit Success!
To celebrate, we met his dad at Chipotle for lunch, and then went home, where he immediately wanted to start his driving lessons! Okay... so we started out in the driveway and he learned all the basics of just starting the car. Then I took him over to a huge, empty parking lot near us, and we drove and drove and drove in circles. I have to say, he's going to be a good driver - he even got that hand-over-hand thing down right away. I will admit that teaching your child to drive is right up there with potty-training, as far as pain and frustration go! But this is the last time I have to do it, and I promise to make the best of it!
Congrats Kevin!
